A classic that started it big. July 21, 2010 John Lindsey (Socorro, New Mexico USA.)
This game is one of video game history's greatest achievements and defined childhoods in the 80's and early 90's! The character Mario was originally in Nintendo's Donkey Kong who later got a name as he appeared with his brother in 1983's "Mario Brothers".
In 1985 when Nintendo was launched to the USA and around the world, Mario became a superstar and a new game classic series was born! In this game you get to play Mario or Luigi in 2-player or one player mode. Your goal is to be in 8 levels that are challenging yet fun as you have to battle various Mushroom-like evil critters called Goompas to all the way to killer turtles called Koopas to rescue Princess Peach (a.k.a. Toadstool) from the evil dragon Boswer.
In each level you get to discover many things like hidden coin blocks to even stairways to the clouds to get coins to get one-ups. This was an unconventional kind of game back in 1985 as it became the biggest platformer game of that decade and broke new ground. You can jump on enemies to squash them (Well except Spikey creatures or Pirahna Plants). It's a big change from either Donkey Kong or Mario Brothers as Super Mario Brothers became a beloved classic for years to come.
I remembered when i got my Nintendo in 1989 on my 7th birthday i was excited that it had this and got it's follow-up Super Mario Brothers 2 as well. They made me happy and satisifed i became a gamer after playing my brother's Atari, the graphics are simple pixilated but still hold up well and still worth replaying even in today's standards compared to Mario titles of now.
Play it man and see where it all started on the franchise.
Classic March 29, 2010 M (I wait behind the wall, gnawing away at your reality) Compared to many video games today, this game may be very simplistic, even boring. But 25 years ago, this was the height of videogame technology. You had it all - a bad guy, a princess to save, a hero who can gain additional powers, and the like. There were even shortcuts one could take so as to not have to traverse all eight worlds. It does get a bit repetitive compared to newer games, but it's still a classic.
This is my first Mario game when I was kid October 19, 2009 vikingscool (Minnesota, USA) It's fun to play this original Super Mario game. It's my second favorite 2-D mario game.
An 11-year-old's review August 29, 2009 Fluffy's Owner Super Mario Bros. for NES is one of the best Mario games of all time. I don't understand why people criticize the graphics. What's wrong with them? The graphics are all right. I think they're downright cute, actually. The gameplay itself is where the game truly shines. Jumping on adorable 2D goombas is very fun and addictive. Personally, I love my NES and Super Mario Bros. The plot itself is very simple, although more interesting than the nowadays Bowser kidnapped Peach for the umptillion time: Bowser wishes to take over the Mushroom Kingdom but the king's daughter, Princess Toadstool, has good magic to beat Bowser and save the Mushroom Kingdom. So, Bowser ties her up and kidnaps her, as mentioned above. He has also kidnapped the Mushroom Retainers -- the Toads, to be exact. By the way, I like the name Princess Toadstool more because a toadstool is a type of mushroom, and the toads are mushrooms, so it also makes more sense. After all, she's not the Princess of Peaches! The music is nice and classic, and catchy at that. All in all, this is a game I recommend. It is great Mario goodness right from the NES. I only have two more things to say: I recommend getting the original NES version, which is more classic. Also, you should get Super Mario World for the SNES.
lets get someting straight. August 21, 2009 Deimos (Alberta) 1 out of 11 found this review helpful
This game is so so but the thing that kills it completely is the horrible, stupid controls. Mario seems to have greese on his boots as he always slides of edges and makes crappy jumps to his death no matter what you do. The graphics were pretty good for the time and the game is some what fun for about a half hour before it gets too repeditive to the point where you never want to see it again. Mario 3 is the best one. This game only sold so many copies because it was shipped out with every NES system. Nintendo Entertainment System saved the gaming market not this crappy game.
